Objectives: This paper presents the results of the application of the program for the early detection of hearing loss in the health area of Bierzo, since its implementation in January 2004. The objectives were to ensure access to the screening test to more than 95% of newborns in the Bierzo region, guaranteeing the diagnosis of hearing loss before 3 months and starting the precise treatment before 6 months of age in 100% of the children diagnosed.
Material and methods: This was a descriptive and retrospective study that evaluated the degree of implementation of the neonatal hearing screening program in the Bierzo health area, both in the population belonging to the public and private health systems. The data collected from January 2004, the year the program was implemented, until December 2014 are presented. The program is universal in nature and consists of 3 phases: screening, diagnosis and treatment.
Results: The coverage in the screening test was increasing progressively, reaching in 2014 a participation higher than 99%, with a percentage of referral to the diagnostic phase of 0.32%. Thirteen cases were diagnosed, the majority being treated with prosthetic adaptation (54%) and receiving early speech therapy in all cases.
Conclusion: In these eleven years of implementation of the program for the early detection of hearing loss in the health area of Bierzo, the proposed quality objectives have been met.
